We have been pretty busy with the new cruise preparations over the past few weeks. But finally, Johan, this year’s participant, is on board along with all the sample equipment and the ship left Cape Town Waterfront. Johan will report back from his experience whenever he has some spare time. He will be extremely busy sampling over the next ten days, though, until the ship reaches the Antarctic ice shelf.
This year, Johan will sample for various projects, such as determining the composition of Southern Ocean phytoplankton and microbial communities and biochemical and physiological adaptations. Together with the results from previous cruises and international efforts, this allows us to better understand the marine ecosystem functioning.
The photos give you an impression of the cargo loading and Johan boarding the ship to leave for the 70 days long expedition! Johan will only return 7 February 2017! Good luck, Johan!
